Would you like to become part of the work we do at Children’s Home Society? Volunteers enhance our work in providing excellent services to vulnerable children, adults and families.
You Have Much to Offer
We know your time is a precious gift, and we are honored by your interest in volunteering. At CHS, we have many different volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups.
We can often customize volunteer tasks upon request and can accommodate volunteers with unique skills or ideas. From bringing in therapy dogs to organizing donations and serving ice cream to the entire campus, volunteer activities can bring enrichment to our environment.
Mentoring and Volunteering
The children, adults and families we serve are CHS’s top priority. We carefully protect their safety, health and confidentiality and expect volunteers to do the same.
All volunteers who spend direct time with a child must be at least 21 years old and complete an application process which includes fingerprinting and background checks. Volunteers who have one-on-one mentoring relationships with children must complete training. We ask all volunteers to make at least a one-year commitment.

Flex Accordion
The Flex Accordion is capable of producing a rich and vibrant sound, making it suitable for a variety of musical styles, such as folk, polka, tango, zydeco, and even some contemporary genres.
A School Buddy serves as an educational advocate for a child when the child is a ward of the state, or his/her legal guardian cannot be located. You represent the child in Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings and quarterly reviews and attend special events and activities on occasion. This position requires 4–8 hours per month.

A Unit Buddy serves as an assistant to staff for weekend projects and off-campus field trips with the children. Activities may include reading with children, games, art projects, hikes and trips to the movies. You become a special friend to the children and staff in the living unit. This position requires 4–6 hours per month.

We have open volunteer positions for people with experience teaching children to play musical instruments. This position needs to be available on Thursday or Friday during school hours.

Campus Friends do not have direct contact with children, but assist with projects such as office work, cleaning, organizing and campus beautification.

Office Assistant Volunteers primarily assist staff with reception and administrative tasks including answering phones, welcoming clients, filing, mailings and other projects. This position is located at Children's Home Child Advocacy Center. Hours available from 10:00 am–5:00 pm on Fridays and additional hours on occasion.

Project and Event Volunteers assist with special projects such as blood drives or fundraising events. Tasks may include helping with mailings, making phone calls, organizing data, fixing bicycles and more.
Individual and group volunteers are vital in fundraising efforts such as collecting toys, batteries, books and other items from our online wish lists and selling raffle tickets.

Join the Fold
Here’s a fun volunteer activity for families, friends and groups of all kinds. Children’s Home Society is collecting origami swans and cranes, which represent hope, for our community art projects statewide. We’ll provide the paper and directions.

Being a Big Buddy provides a special opportunity to become a friend and mentor to a child. Big Buddies commit to one year of visiting a CHS child, typically on a weekly basis with a minimum of two visits per month. Big Buddies also may act on a student's behalf in the educational decision-making process.

School/Classroom Buddies tutor children, provide help to teachers and help straighten the library at Loving School. This position has opportunities to "adopt" a classroom or work in different locations as needed and may help mornings or afternoons.

Volunteer at Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety
To ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals in our care, all volunteers who are in direct contact with our clients in Shelter must be at least 21 years old, pass background checks and a drug screen, fingerprinted and provide three references. Training is provided.

The Flex Accordion is capable of producing a rich and vibrant sound, making it suitable for a variety of musical styles, such as folk, polka, tango, zydeco, and even some contemporary genres.
This position processes donations, stocks, organizes and maintains inventory of the boutique and provides customer service to clients. Associates commit to one 2-hour shift per week to keep the boutique stocked and assist clients. Boutique hours are 10:00 am–Noon.

Child Advocates provide companionship, comfort and care to children from newborn to age 18 who are staying in shelter. Child Advocates are needed most during the 4:00– 7:30 pm time period.

This volunteer position is located at the courthouse. Volunteers warmly greet and check in individuals, answer questions and maintain confidentiality at all times. This role is scheduled for Tuesdays from 1:00–4:30 pm.

Donations Processors document, inspect and organize donations and stock, organize and maintain inventory of closets and storage areas. Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at any time from 9:00 am–5:00 pm.

Volunteers at the reception desk answer doors and assist visitors, answer the telephone, route callers and distribute messages, record in-kind donations and ensure that security standards are consistently maintained. Hours are Monday-Friday, 4:00–5:00 pm.

Every year, the Shelter recruits volunteers for the Gift Wrap Booth in the Empire Mall. Individuals and groups volunteer to wrap gifts for shoppers, who make free will donations. Proceeds benefit the Shelter. The booth is open for three to four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volunteers must be 16 years old and anyone under 18 must have an adult chaperone.
